March – May

Spring in Azerbaijan

Novruz lights up the whole country, Baku turns mild and green, and the lowlands are at their best before the summer heat arrives.

Weather
15–25°C in Baku
Crowds
Low to moderate
Best for
Novruz, city, Gobustan
Note
High mountains still snowbound

Spring is one of the loveliest times to see Azerbaijan. Baku sits in the comfortable low-to-mid 20s°C, the Caspian boulevard fills with families, and the pre-Islamic new-year festival of Novruz (around 20–21 March) brings bonfires, sweets, tightrope walkers and street celebrations to every town. It is the season for the city, the Absheron fire sites and the semi-desert of Gobustan — the high northern mountains around Shahdag and Khinalug are still under snow until late May.

Season highlights
  • Novruz Bayram — bonfires, samani wheat, shekerbura and street performers
  • Gobustan petroglyphs and mud volcanoes in soft spring light
  • Baku Old City (Icherisheher), Maiden Tower and the seaside Boulevard
  • Absheron fire sites — Ateshgah fire temple and the ever-burning Yanar Dag
